How to Choose a Good Running Shoe for Top Performance

Whether you are new to running or a seasoned runner, choosing a good running shoe is a priority for stability, comfort, safety, and performance. Many factors must be taken into consideration when purchasing your first or subsequent pair of shoes such as gender, arch height, and purpose of use. There are many shoe types depending on these factors as well as price. Major manufacturers include Asics, New Balance, Fila, Reebok, Nike, and others. Shoes are available for both men and women in a variety of types, colors, and prices.

Those who have high arches should look for a neutral shoe type since they do not need a lot of support in the shoe while those with medium high arches should consider a stability shoe since they provide more support. Cushioned stability shoes provide even more support and stability. The motion control shoe with more stability provides the maximum support and is best suited to runners with flat arches. Almost all runners can wear stability shoes so it is a safe choice if you are unsure about your arch height. Other types of shoes specifically designed for speed practice and racing are the lightweight trainer and the racing shoe, but you will not have the cushion, stability, and durability of other types of shoes.

In addition to selecting the correct shoe type, selecting the correct size is extremely important for comfort, injury-resistance, and performance. Your regular shoe size might not be the right choice in a running shoe. In fact, frequently you will be fitted with a shoe that is smaller by up to one full size. However, if you have problems such as blisters, numbing feeling, or darkened toenails, you may need a shoe that is larger or wider.

You may not always know when you need to replace your current pair of running shoes. Beginning at about 250 to 350 miles, you should check your shoes to be sure they are not worn out by looking at the wear on the sole of the shoe. You may be fortunate and get up to 800 miles, but your weight, shoe type, type of surfaces you run on, and how your feet strike the surface are all reasons why your shoes may wear out sooner or later than other runners. If you are doing nothing differently, but develop some pain and soreness, you may be ready for new shoes to avoid injury.

Among the best rated are the ASICS Gel Kayano running shoes for both men and women. They receive excellent reviews and are comfortable straight out of the box with better cushioning than some more expensive running shoes. They are not cheap, prices start around $70 and go up to around $140 but for those who are serious about their running they are good value. Some people however disliked the new lacing system and they are slightly heavier than some other running shoes. For more information see ASICS Men’s GEL-Kayano 16 Running Shoe Review.

Another range that are well liked are the New Balance running shoes. One of the most popular for women from this manufacturer is the 805 running shoe. This brightly colored, sparky running shoe is well liked and comfortable although not everyone likes the bright colors!
