If you are considering the purchase of a tabletop, wall or garden water fountain you must make certain that the fountain you are looking at will fit into the area where it will go and will also look good. Outdoor garden fountains can be very big and expensive and you should make certain you buy one that will look good in your garden and comfortably fit into it's location. Below are some guidelines that will help you make a decision on the right fountain for your garden or home, whether it is a wall, table top or outdoor floor fountain in order for you can make a sensible choice.

Wall Fountains

Wall fountains can be purchased in both vertical and horizontal models. These different design are suitable for different locations. A large upright fountain would be ideal for a high ceilinged room. On a very wide wall a tall vertical fountain will probably look awkward unless you intend to place other objects on either side of the fountain. In a long walled room with a lower ceiling a horizontal wall fountain would be more suitable. In a room with high ceilings a horizontal fountain can often look much smaller than it really is. You would be best to think about the depth of the fountain. This could be a problem if placed in a narrow walkway though the majority wall fountains are just 6" deep so this generally won't be a problem.

Sizing Up a Wall Fountain

Check for the size of the wall fountain you intend to purchse then measure the wall where you are going to hang it. Attach post-it notes or thumb tacks at each corner then look at it from a distance to make sure that it appears OK. Another way is to use masking tape to trace out the outline of the fountain for a better impression of how it will appear when it is hung in place.

Table Top Fountains

Check for the diameter of your chosen fountain then confirm it will fit where you intend it to go. It’s helpful to position something of similar size there to make sure that it appears good. To assess the height you could heap a few books to the required height and see how it looks. Some of the tabletop fountains can differ in height as they are made from natural stones that, of course, are not consistent. Make sure you make allowances for this when deciding on the fountain to purchase.

Outdoor Floor Fountains

The width is the most important consideration when choosing an outdoor floor fountain. If you are going to put the fountain under an arbor or on a patio or other construction you will need to consider as well how high the fountain is. You could pile boxes in the place you have chosen to make sure that it will fit easily and that it will look good.

Fountain Water Sources

Outdoor garden fountains usually use recirculated water and which needs to be replaced as it is lost by evaporation and splashing. A pump circulates the water all the way through the fountain. Most home or office fountains are of a recirculation type. A tank holds the water and recirculating fountains can be located anywhere a source of electricity is at hand. Fountains that recirculate the water should be checked often and the reservoit refilled to prevent damage to the pump

Recirculating Fountains

The frequency with which you will have to refill the tank will depend on the humidity of the air in the fountains location. A fountain in a heated home in the winter may need refilling often, preferably with small amounts of water more frequently, rather than allowing the reservoir to almost run dry before you top it up. For those of us with house plants simply refill the reservoir whenever you water them.
